Potential Operational Delineations (PODs)

Important! The data displayed in IFTDSS are intended for strategic use only. Always verify the positional accuracy of the data with local knowledge.

Overview

Potential Operational Delineations (PODs) are fire management and planning units defined by potential control features that can be leveraged for fire containment during a wildfire or prescribed fire. Typical POD boundaries are a combination of roads, rivers, major ridges, barren areas, waterbodies, major fuel changes, or other locations that facilitate control.

Data used by IFTDSS

The PODs data depicted in IFTDSS is derived from the National PODs Feature Service internal to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) ArcGIS Online (AGOL) organization. This service is the official depiction of PODs approved by agency administrators. In this service, features are visible when: Feature Access = Cooperators or Feature Access = Public.

Only the PODs Polygon layer is currently made available within IFTDSS. This geospatial layer depicts PODs polygons defined by potential control features. To learn more about the attributes associated with PODs polygons, please reference the NWCG PODs Data Standards .

PODs Publicly Available Version

The version described below is slightly different than that used by IFTDSS.

A public version of the National PODs Feature Service is made available through the NIFC AGOL Organization as well. In this service, features are visible only when: Feature Access = Public.
