Swipe widget in Map Studio

The Swipe widget swipe widget allows you to visually compare two layers by click and dragging the swipe bar across your map. This can helpful when comparing landscapes, model outputs, or combinations of these layers when analyzing layer interactions.

Important! The visibility of the layers in the swipe widget depends on:

  • The visibility of the layer in the Layer List.

  • The order of the layers in the Layer List.

  • Layers and features must already be turned on in Map Studio either via the Layer List or Simulation Output Tools buttons before they are visible in the Swipe dropdown menu.

To use the Swipe widget swipe widget:

  1. Click the Swipe widget swipe widget.
  2. Choose whether you prefer to swipe horizontally or vertically.

The swipe widget open with the 'horizontal' and 'vertical' options visible at the top of the widget.

  3. Select the leading (top or left) layer to display. The options in this dropdown rely on those that are visible in the Layer List.

Tip: Don't see a layer you expect in the dropdown? Make sure the layer is turned on in the Layer List.

  4. Select the trailing layer (bottom or right) to display. If the layer you intend to compare is already displayed, you may not need to make a selection on this level. In the image below for example, the landscape layer on the bottom is visible even though it is not selected in the bottom layer of Swipe.

Bottom landscape layer is visible in the map even though it is not selected in the bottom layer of the swipe widget.

  5. In the example image below, a Landscape Fire Behavior model output with flame lengths is selected so it appears in the top half and landscape data appears in the bottom half. A shapefile is visible over both layers. That shapefile is at the top of the Layer List, and not specified in either swipe layer, so it appears on top of both layers.

  6. To turn off the swipe feature, click on the swipe widget icon in the top right of Map Studio.

Tip: Tips for using Swipe:

  • Shapefiles will tend to display over rasters such as landscapes and model outputs, regardless of where in the Layer List they appear.
  • Refrain from moving layers up or down in the Layer List while the Swipe widget is active.
  • Having the transparency of each layer set to zero makes it easier to distinguish between the layers.
